For the last year I have been one of the lucky ones my frequecy has been clear day and night. I didn't have much night fade but now the Canadians have invated my station instead of getting a good mile at night I am down to about a 1/4 mile. I was wondering if I changed my tx to 1710 the only clear channel in the area at night
would that turn me into a pirate?since part 15 says you can only go 1705 or is this one of the grey areas. Is there a bigger potential for interference on other bands if I transmit at 1710.

The technical interpretation of this is clear. All emissions from a part 15 AM transmitter must be at or below 1705 kHz. This means, considering the usual sideband width of 5 kHz. that the highest carrier frequency available is 1700 kHz. 1710 kHz. is not legal. Using a transmitter with wider audio bandwidth would require lowering the carrier frequency below 1700 kHz.

As I compare this to the rules for amateur operation where it is clear that all emissions must be within the assigned bands I am sure the same interpretation would apply here.

Sorry that this is probably not what you wanted to hear, but this is how the rules are written.

Neil

Thats what I thought. I had to ask because I seen before on the rangemater site a link to a site that a radio engineer who should know the rules was brodcasting on 1710 and claiming to be legal.
I think I will not change and find other ways of keeping legal but increasing range.

Ah Yes,

our very own local pirate and Clear Channel DJ "Tony D." who prides himself along with Clear Channel Engineer "Neal Newman" in helping bust other pirates.

I know all too well about the station you are talking about.

Thank You,
