When I realized some of you guys have
done RC aircraft stuff, I just had to ask
this question. (I always wanted to do
RC myself, but it never happened.)
My Part 15 station does not have a
computer. As you may know, the
DOGGRADIO computer died about
6 months ago. Now I have a tech
friend who is searching for another
junker for me, but it will either happen
or it won't. For many years, my station
didn't have any computer, and I had to
resort to all kinds of goofy but interesting
ways to automate the programming.
Tape machines on timers - relays and
resistors across the audio line to turn
one source down so an ID could come on,
that sort of thing.
I have a bunch of little MP3 players, an IPOD,
and a couple of digital voice recorders that
actually have amazing audio fidelity. I was
stunned to see that a 40 dollar Sony digital
voice recorder could sample at 192 kB/sec.
If you feed it with an EQ and a compressor/
limiter, you can record music on it, and it
sounds surprisingly good. (Mono, of course,
but that's OK for an AM BCB part 15 set-up. )
So you can probably see where I'm going with
this. For instance, If I used the right kind of
timer and power supply, I could have a servo
press the play button on one of these devices,
and get a top of the hour ID, or local weather,
or whatever. I have already devised a system
where one programming source can start up
and another will automatically reduce it's
audio volume and fall into the background
or go completely silent. (I think I said that
already.)
I know the servo would have to be rigged with
a 555 timer, or something similar, so it
only presses the button for a brief moment.
The servo I saw on the Radio Shack website
runs on a low DC voltage, and has a rotating
shaft, with some prongs on it. I'm sure you
guys can picture this - especially you RC guys.
I also have a really lame radio controlled car
that I can tear apart for a servo.
Could it be used to press a "play" button?
The MP3 player I have in mind has a fairly large strong
button. I think it's possible.
What do you think?
(And now, back to the Carrier Current experiments.)
Best Wishes,
Bruce, DOGGRADIO STUDIO 2
I'm the cleaning lady in your office.
You were still logged on.
Why don't you just try it.
Zelda
OK.
You missed a spot on the rug
over by the door.

Could there be a serious industrial accident in which you decide to manually push a button but your RC servo jabber decides to spear your finger and you become surgically part of the whole thing?
Could it snag your pet?
Zelda sounds like a helpful co-worker.
Best Wishes,
Bruce, DRS2
Set your RC jabber finger to randomly flip channels on the TV remote.
