I am aware that there are mixed feelings about NAB with part15ers, however, I wanted to put this out there just in case.

My company is building out an IPTV offering and I go to the NAB conference each year - I am there looking at tech for IPTV.

I know that the show has a radio section as well - if there is interest from anyone here I am happy to take a walkthrough of the radio section while I am there and take notes/photos/pick-up things.

Let me know if so and what you are interested in and I will do my best. The show is mid april.

Jon Paul

Tremendous opportunity Jon Paul.

Naturally we are curious what spokespersons for NAB might think or say about part 15 hobby radio.

The discomfort expressed about NAB exists because in the past there have been one or more attempts by NAB to interfere with the rights presently allowed under FCC Part 15 Rules.

If they have any proposals, actions or plans to change part 15 they are likely to inform you if you ask.

That would be great! Maybe record some audio too?

FWIW I know a few station owners and NAB members that actually run their own part 15 stations at home as well.

Good if that is the case, perhaps there really are NAB members out there who know part 15 can be used without all the worries some have us to believe is running rampant among that organization's members.

I do not think all NAB members are bad people, in every crowd, you are going to find the good as well the bad.

I am sure there are a lot of broadcast station owners who play with part 15 transmitters in their spare time.

I know a select few DJs who play around with part 15 AM transmitters in their homes, where they have the freedom to air whatever programming they wish.

Bruce.

Do Canadian stations have their own version of the NAB or do they join up with their U.S. brothers?  Just wondering...

I know that there is a 'Canadian Broadcasters Association'  http://www.cab-acr.ca/ but that appears to be more industry association and less promotional than the NAB.

From a trade show though, I am pretty sure that everyone goes to NAB 😉

Cheers!

The Legacy says: I wonder if they would even admit that fact?  I've read how many DJ's started their career or after their career ended used part 15 Radio stations in their own home to have an audience and enjoy Radio as a hobby.  This is something to explore as well.  And if there are NAB members against part 15 micro broadcasting maybe somehow they can be reminded as such in order to get them to not cause harm to the hobby.  I have to admit I hae a lot of paranoia when it comes to the NAB.  You'll know about that on the other forum as some of us may express this.  I'm still trying to figure who is cool to join the Private section.  I have a few more possible members.  Let us know what you find about what the NAB's intent is.

Paranoia? Why not join NAB and relieve your paranoia?

I'm one of those commercial radio station owners and NAB members who plays with a Part 15 station. Matter of fact, to show you how evil I am (grin) I was chairman of my state broadcasting association up until a couple of years ago.

I've gotta say, from what I've observed, Part 15 broadcasters are the least of the NAB's concerns. Only in rare cases do they cause damaging interference to commercial stations.

Pirates, however, are a different story. Many of them, especially in urban areas where the dial is crowded, do cause harmful interference to licensed broadcasters. That can hurt ratings which in turn can hurt revenues. And believe me, commercial broadcasters have some big bills to pay every month.

One common misconception is that licensed broadcasters hate pirates because they take away advertisers. That's nonsense. It just doesn't happen.

The airwaves are regulated for a reason. As Part 15ers, we can either follow the rules or get busted. Personally, I'd love it if Part 15 allowed for higher power/better coverage on both bands. Let's work on that! But if the FCC perceives that hobby broadcasters cannot follow the rules in their present form, why would they want to give us more power and coverage... and likely make interference matters worse?

Part 15ers' worst enemy is not the NAB. It's the pirate operations.

Marosborne: you have some good points in urban areas. It may be best to ask for a separate service for Hobby Broadcasters and keep some of those goals we are looking for. I do understand places like New York does have issues because of the ethnic crowd who does not have a community station that plays and caters to their needs. Small communities and senior homes could do nicely with a low power station that is much lower than LPFJ but oes have the ability to have community announcements in this rural areas. I didn't see this thread till now. Been very busy with other things. Some of what you brought up makes sense. However a 1 Watt station in a very rural area where as no Radio station is within 60 miles is surely not a threat to anyone unless they don't observe the adjacent channel spacing. You have some good points to talk about that is for sure.
