The designs, though carefully crafted, are a bit complex for part 15 operation. No harm if someone wants to build them. I prefer a simpler approach.
For AM, I use a SSTRAN AMT3000. I set it up with an oscilloscope, and forgot it...perfect every time I checked it. Without an oscilloscope, it is easy to set by ear...just follow the SSTRAN instructions.
For FM, just set the volume so it sounds like a commercial station. If you over deviate, it will distort, you will hear it, and you can back off on the volume.
Maybe I over simplify and maybe I have a calibrated ear, but it works for me. (I have confirmed my FM ear with a Motorola test set. Usually I overestimate the deviation and it is less than I expect).
