Hi folks,
My boss, the Reverend Billy Graham, made use of LPB products as far back as 1986, providing simultaneous translation for his crusades, by placing "leaky coax" in a stadium seating section and using LPB transmitters for the signal. My friend and radio engineer, Ira Schipper, came up with this legal AM transmission method.
Well, as technology marches on, it's time to clean out the warehouse and "dispose" these transmitters. I have about 10 new AM-2000, and several older models, along with the crystals to tune with. Lots of leaky coax to go with. Can anyone on the forum tell me:
1. possible market and selling place for these xmtrs?
2. suggested pricing?
Help. I don't want to dumpster these items, and believe that someone would want these.
The LPB-AM 2000 is very much sought after and very rare to find, I think you can sell a batch of them right here.
What did they cost when new?
I imagine there's a standard devaluation based on age and some fraction of the original price.
I look for my LPB bargains on eBay, where the bidding process might serve you well.
The LPB AM-2000 transmitter was a 100mW AM transmitter/antenna combination sold by LPB starting in the year 2000. It was identical to the older Ultra Sensors Inc. Trans-AM 100 (TA100). LPB acquired the rights to the USI transmitter. There is a PDF Radio World review of the AM-2000 here on Part15.US at http://www.part15.us/files.p15/1448rw_LPB_LPFM.pdf. Despite the title of the review, the transmitter had nothing to do with LPFM.
The AM-2000 is not a carrier current transmitter and will not feed leaky coax without transmitter modification. It is PLL tuned so doesn't require any special crystals for tuning. The single crystal feeding the PLL is permanently soldered on the board.
So, either you have a bunch of LPB carrier current transmitters that are suitable for leaky coax and the model numbers aren't AM-2000, or you have a bunch of AM-2000 transmitters which are not carrier current/leaky coax transmitters. Clarification will help to determine the value of your collection.
PhilB served an important step by mentioning that the LPB AM-2000 is a 100mW Part 15 transmitter and not a carrier current type. I knew this, but I shouldn't have assumed that everyone else would know.
I'd be interested in an AM-2000 if it is indeed that. I always wanted to play around with the old Trans-AM but never could find one.
As Chairman of The ALPB, I would be willing to accept one of the AM-2000 transmitters for evaluation. ALPB members would probably be willing to cover shipping costs to particitpate in this evaluation process.
We certainly would not want for these transmitters to end up in the dumpster!
and as Rick, I too would be happy to accpt one.. seriosuly though, if you sell them, post them here - I'd be interested in buying one..
if you want to donate an am2000 to classic hits 1670 am we would be glad to accept one.
we make no money from this operation and is operated entirely out of my pocket.
i have big plans for this station, sunday ministry, local programming, remote located transmitter sites, etc.
eventually i would like to make it a 501c3 when i learn how to do all the paperwork
i would be happy to do a dry review on it and i have all the measuring gear her and i could pass the dry review onto another member for editing.
that goes for anyone. who ever wants to donate transmitting gear to 1670 am we are looking for all we can get to add remote sites all over the local area.
The AM 2000 was a little over $1K when it was new in 1998-99. I'd aim for $400-600 per unit.
They are not as sophisticated as say a Radio Systems iAM -- they're just plain ol' frequency agile AM transmitters (no autotuning, compressor et al). But they are worth the price. Go for the full 6 C's if the power supply is included.
i would also like to reverse engineer one and draw out a schematic for it.
I sure could use of those right about now. Can you donate one? "said tongue in cheek" lol
I think you guys have been had IMHO.
There's no way the Reverend Billy Graham Cracker would trick anyone, or am I naive?
🙂
Hi Guys i'm new to the page i'll give you a breif descripition about me my name is Jeff i been in electronic for 14 years i also worked in a educational fm station for aprox 8 years from being a remote operator, announcer, program director, board operator & repair and having my own shows. And i going to have my own part 15 am station still getting things together. Here is an answer for stevevan2 Question 1 steve Yes its possible to sell the AM-2000 transmitters here and on ebay but ask here first to see if anyone wants them before going to ebay. Question 2 Look around it's 80's tech shape running condition ( parts in the transmitter can go bad from sitting around to long ) which also play a big part in pricing but also keep in mind to help the small man out so he can get on the air. I would like to get 2 of the new LPB AM-2000 Transmitters from you. Never Put stuff in dumpster there people who will take it even down to radio muesum keep the history alive please never through away I seen too much american history go to the dump and it' sad to see happen!
