Hey there, RFB, it looks like you
and I were posting on the board at
about the same time.

I just wanted to mention a few other
Long Wave areas where people are
experimenting.

We'll, there's the guys that are experimenting
below 10 kHz. Yikes!

Then, there's the old 73 kHz allocation, that
was authorized in some countries, but not the
U.S. I don't think anybody is there, now -
but I could be wrong.

A lot of European countries and Canada have the
135.7 to 137.8 kHz range. I think that's a ham
band for them. We in the U.S. didn't get it,
but that's another story.

And here in the U.S., there are people operating
under special Part 5 experimental licenses from
the FCC. The range is about 505 to 509 kHz.
I'll have to check, but there was a guy about
40 miles away from me operating about 1000 watts
DC in to the final on 506 kHz, and try as I might,
I couldn't hear him. Maybe I didn't listen enough.

If you really want to get blown away, Google Jay
Rusgrove, W1VD. He was doing a bunch of work down
there. And also, there is www.500kc.com, which also
is very impressive. They are a Part 5 experimental
group.

For whatever it's worth.

There is a video of a guy
running (I think it's an AM88)
on 187 kHz longwave Part 15.

He is using a 30 foot vertical.

If you go to YouTube and type in:

fccpart15jam

...You will get the video. And check
the comments below the video, they are
interesting, too.

This guy is not running voice - he is
running a beacon with Morse code and also
a digital protocol, I believe.

Still, it is very cool.

"Awaiting instructions on uploading and downloading from the FTP."

This folder will be set up so that there are sub folders which will contain the uploaded files, a folder for each program title. This will help keep things organized and easy to find.

I also suggest the audio file include a text file with program description and such. To keep things further organized, this added text file should have the same file name (minus extension) as the audio file's name.

For example..if the audio file name is something like "LowPowerHour01.mp3", then its added text info file should be named "LowPowerHour01.txt". This text file can include any important information regarding the program and content, total run times and segment times and production date and any other info as deemed necessary.

Before I create this FTP account, what is needed first is a list of proposed programs and their source so that the sub folders can be created below the main folder. More can be added later as we go.

Information to the LW FTP such as log in info and such will be emailed to those participating. To sign up, simply send an email to [email protected] and include your station name, call sign, and contact info. Also include what program or programs you wish to upload so that I can create the appropriate folders. Please put LWFTP in the subject line so that your email will not be tossed into the spam filter.

Each station that participates will have complete access for uploading and downloading to and from any of the source folders. When logged into the FTP, you will be taken to the root main folder and from there all of the sub folders can be easily chosen and programs uploaded or downloaded.

FTP maintenance will be handled by myself and any updates or notices will be emailed to each participating station as well as notes or other important information in text file format on the FTP main root folder.

Any questions please feel free to ask.

RFB

This LW network is a giant of an idea.

There is a lot to think about and plan.

We are lucky that RFB is simplifying the matter of a central site for program distribution.

Even thinking of "what questions to ask next" is a challenge....

Here is a "next" question: Will there be a running network stream that can be joined for times when we don't download and run our own playlist?

"Will there be a running network stream that can be joined for times when we don't download and run our own playlist?"

I think it would be a good idea to have one. Perhaps rotate the source feed from one station to another on a scheduled basis. Like the FTP, the network stream would be private and only accessible to the participating network stations for both reception of network programs and encoding to the network.

There can also be a "public" stream of the network feed on a server that simply relays off the private server, isolating the main internal network server from being over loaded to ensure clean solid network feeds to the participating stations.

I thought there was a post from maybe last year 2010 about modifying the SStran AMT3000 for use in the longwave bands? But my memory is a bit hazy so i am not quite sure what to enter in the search engine. Is it possible to modify the amt3000 for longwave and would it go that far down?

160 to 190 khz?

EDIT:
Actually i found it!! lol
I dug a bit deeper and here is part of a discussion but this thread leads to another so a little more digging is needed.

Hi Rock95Seven,

I do know the AMT3000 will go somewhat out of band, but I don't know its upper limits, nor whether it will go lower than 530.

To get it up to 1710kHz use these settings

S4 - Up Down Up Down Up Down Up Down

S5 - Up Down Up Up

I have created the network ftp account. Now all that is needed are participants.

We now have 3 signed up on the FTP.

To get listed and access for the network FTP server, send an email with "LWFTP" in the subject line, station name/call sign and contact info to:

[email protected]

Log in instructions will be sent via email.

This long wave radio project is a super idea and I want everybody who grasps its value and wishes to participate to keep the flag raised. By that I mean, don't lose interest.

RFB has made a major investment by dedicating an FTP site for the programming source aspect of the network. I encourage RFB to keep that FTP alive, because there may be a slow startup, since members will be pre-occupied setting up the physical underpinnings of the project, including transmitters and antennas.

But programming is equally important, and we have not yet discussed how to "approve" programming for the network. For example, suppose I have a favorite program that I submit, but no one likes it. Should it be included or excluded, and what is the voting process?

All of the questions need to be worked out over time, but most of all, KEEP THE FLAG RAISED!

The network FTP will remain active for as long as the LW Network exists.

I am negotiating with my current stream server provider for a dedicated network stream feed. Will advise. 🙂
