Well, if you feel that way, then you should certainly leave, as the hobby isn't living up to your expectations. And only you can decide that.
I don't see the Part 15 hobby, or amateur radio, the same way you do. Yes, there are some self-serving egos out there (the Transmitter Challenge defence/aftermath comes to mind) but they're in the minority, as well as the Forums and websites that feed those egos. For the most part, on this particular Forum and in the ALPB, I just see a number of people who want to help each other, as well as newcomers to Part 15. And my dealings with people in amateur radio have always been enjoyable.
You just have to ignore the crap and the idiots - I used to have a sign in my office that read 'Don't Let The Turkeys Get You Down'.
kc8gpd.... when so many things all seem negative all at the same time I think it's just a passing mood and not necesarilly a permanent situation.
Except that if a woman doesn't appreciate a man's interests that can be a real downer. And there are women who support and even enjoy the same hobbies as the man she is involved with, but it's hard to locate just the right partner. Relationships are even more difficult in 2014 than in past times because women have become so independent they find out they don't actually need a man. That is a true depresser and what I think is that you should stay unhappy about that and use radio as a way of forgetting about it.
As far as selling things, this isn't exactly a store or an e-Bay and many members already have their stuff or may not need the things that are offered, but at least it's a place where selling can be tried.
If you do leave, you are always welcome back.
.... ok .... umm.. wow.
So - Carl started this as a way to get some cash generated for Lefty. I would be more on-board with getting him gear to run a station.
sooooo.. how does one get hold of Lefty these days? In the past, when he was selling stuff I had tried via this forum, email, and even through his website - never actually got through to him...
Didn't you throw in the towel a couple of times before?
i vanish from time to time - life gets in the way and all that.. usually when I get in a tiff, I build something (like this website.. it was because I didn't like the way some other site was run.. forget which it was now)
Not sure what it has to do with wanting to help someone if they want the help though... ?
Lefty still has at least one Talking House. Maybe the one I gave him way back.
I spoke with him the other day. He still plans to put his show back online soon.
I think what he's really lookin' for is an AM that's gone dark or about to and he'll work a deal to buy the station.
Now that... would be way cool.
Like Johnny Appleseed who sprinkled seeds on the ground which grew into great orchards, Lefty Radio-Seed leaves a trail of historic broadcast ventures.
Lefty was the first to start an organization devoted to low power radio and today we have the ALPB (Association for Low Power Broadcasters).
Lefty's first part 15 radio network served as kind of a demonstration model to discover how to do it.
Then came the second and most recent network venture, based on the powerful AMT5000, planned to serve Santa Cruz and Beyond.
As Lefty changes course and heads for the next chapter we can know this: what he does now will be bigger and more spectacular than the previous accomplishments. Reviving a full-power AM from the dark would be typical of what we expect.
Join the ALPB.
"I think what he's really lookin' for is an AM that's gone dark or about to and he'll work a deal to buy the station."
He sold is Part 15 equipment for a couple hundred dollars due to financial problems, but he's looking to buy a AM station?.. Come on..
I didn't say he IS buying one but what is Man without his dreams. Lefty told me he'd love to work some kind of deal to get on the air even if he does his show pro-bono on an existing station.
And hard times are a temporary situation. With a partner or two and some strategic financing anything is possible. Lee de Forest went bankrupt several times and was still a success.
I wish Lefty the best, wherever he is, and
whatever he is doing.
I wish I could REALLY do something for him,
but I can't right now.
As far as revitalizing a "dark" AM station - yeah -
I think we have all "dreamed" about that.
But even if one could buy it for a dollar, the
cost of running and maintaining it would
be a disaster. Still, I picture a 250 watt
daytime only big band/oldies
music station, with a stick
in the back yard. On 1590 kHz.
Some nice red lights would be on there,
with a little broadcast shack at the
bottom - AND with a vacuum tube control board and lots of
45RPM records.
Oh yeah, 3 1/2 watts nightime authorization.
There you go.
Bruce, DOGRADIO (As it was, DOGRADIO turned out to
be too much for me to handle...)
But, my friend, you are still here-with us- and within you is that dream, that spark that will rekindle one day into that 250 watt AM Daytimer with vintage equipment, a stick in the back yard and a stack of wax waiting to lauched into the ether to traverse the universe throughout all time.
"For what is man without his dreams."
On the recent LPH#87 we hear a prolonged segment of a horrible radio person blathering about idiotic stupid stuff and retardedly asking, "What did I say? What's everybody upset about? They have murder on TV, all I did was talk about raping the mailman."
This poor example of a man currently employed by a Santa Cruz radio station should spell "job opening" for someone wanting to work professionally in the Santa Cruz market.
Lefty Gomez wants to work professionally in the Santa Cruz market.
Two and two is four.
The station is KSCO AM 1080.
That guy is Rich Liberman and he lost his chance at having a Show on KSCO or KOMY.
I never liked him on the air as all he talks about is stupid stuff.
On my hopes for a radio show I am trying to get on the Air at KOMY1340.
But we shall see if the powers that be feel the same.
My Main reason is that KOMY is running Coast to Coast as is KSCO.
That seems waistful to me and I would love a chance to take on George Norry again in that time slot.
The after Dark show kicked his ass the last time I was on KNRY 1240 AM and I feel that I could do it again..
Thanks for the posts guys.
George Nory is over-rated and nowhere near the quality of Art Bell, know what I mean? At the most George is a "nice guy" and how far would that go in the Marines.
Lefty, I want you to go opposite "Coast to Coast" and prove that radio on land is stronger than radio on some coast.
Want a letter of recommendation from World Round Radio in the Internet Building?
I listen to Coast to Coast rather often, but I also listen to After Dark as it sometimes airs on the same station before Coast to Coast airs.
I tune in 1290AM in Savannah, but I just checked the WTKS website and it doesn't show it in scheduling, but I know it has aired regularly at least a couple times a month.
