Frank Admissions in 95-Degree Heat
During teenage-hood I sauntered to a homeshow at the "St. Louis Arena" where KMOX AM 1120 was broadcasting live and I got famous newsman Rex Davis to call me over for an interview.
I told him I wanted to get into radio and he gave me an opportunity to make an audition announcement, so I introduced a classical composer that I had no idea how to pronounce. They gave me a small disc of the moment which I still have.
It may have been the low point in KMOX radio history.
These recording booths were for people to make their own records, of themselves, not make copies of commercial records.
When I was a kid the shopping mall near us had one of these. This would have been late 60's early 70's. It was surely a carry over machine from an earlier time. You put a couple quarters in, when the red light comes on you start talking, singing or whatever. I think they ran up to 2 minutes long. When you were done a plastic record came out the slot with your recording on it. There were several different machines over the years. I remember recording me singing Happy Birthday to my Dad, and making records of me telling jokes, etc. I was in about4 or 5th grade. I think a couple of the records survive around here someplace.

Oddly enough the idea crossed my mind just last weekend. Every now and then a booth that's restorable comes up for sale but they are tens of thousands of dollars.
