You may get some comments here, but I can assure you (from my experiences) that they are all intended to get you and to keep you Part 15 legal.  You certainly won't be hounded by the owner (or moderators) of this website - that's not the purpose of it.

Just out of curiosity, I did some searching on e-bay, and there is at least one listing for a C-Quam Part 15 AM transmitter; a guy out of California is selling them (an analogue tuning one with frequency counter and a PLL version as well, although the latter had no current listings).  In his listing description, he links to several youtube videos showing the transmitter at work.  And if you can take several of the comments attached to the youtube video at face value, it appears to work well - one guy reported getting approximately 1 mile range.

Now, I don't know if these things are certified or not (he does say they're compliant) and really, nothing more about them such as whether they are kits, semi-kits or fully assembled.  But it might be worthwhile investigating, at the very least to look at the videos and get some idea of what might be possible.  That Chris Cuff transmitter you acquired may not be the only route to what you want to achieve.

APISYS (overseas) also sells one - they often list it on e-bay (it doesn't appear to be there now) but you can find it on their website.

Bruce, look at this.... http://www.ebay.com/itm/AM-stereo-C-QUAM-P-L-L-Professional-transmitter-/141690110371?&_trksid=p2056016.m2518.l4276...meets part 15, all functions outside cabinet so no circuit board access, fully assembled.

Something to consider as an alternative to all the headaches with the current transmitter you have and this person you can contact.

Just a thought.

Mark

First thanks for the tips on transmitters that I could try when I expand to using more then one transmitter.

Secondly, I am glad everyone understands why I posted my disclaimer, I know that eventually, someone who visits here will make a statement at another site and the next thing I'll know, I'll be in someone's spotlight again.

I had nothing to hide in the past and nothing to hide now, and for those that are in the dark, no I never had a run in with the FCC, just a run in with another part 15 website and having my name plastered under the words BLATANT FM PIRATE! Trust me, someone will mention me over there stating that I was thinking about starting up an AM radio station and then behind hidden forums, the words will surface that perhaps it's time to have that engineer pay Bruce's neighborhood another visit, as I simply do not trust this guy (Bruce) who has no respect of the rules!! Blah...Blah...Blah!

So unlike the rest of you, he knows my address, my real name and I know he's not done with me yet. So yeah, one microvolt over the limit and I'm sure I'll have troubles with that crew over there once again.

I do not own an FIM-41 so I can only do so much to make sure my AM station is 100% legal and I don't need him being a part of me being found in error and getting an actual NOUO because of his spitefullness.

I just want everyone here to know first hand, that I am here to participate as a LEGAL part 15 hobbyist nothing more, nothing less.

Bruce.

MisterBruce, I think your troubles are over.

Now that the shennigans of the other site have been exposed I think they will retreat into a "Who, me?" posture and leave you alone.

By coming here to this website you have gained many friends, many powerful friends.

We are the ALPB, the Association for Low Power Broadcasters and we are completely opossed to nonsense.

ArtisanRadio & Mark Strange that you guys mention this guy with those AM C-Quam Stereo transmitters on ebay, I mentioned those at HB but they responded with negative responses and said Chris Cuff's transmitters were better.

However, I am familiar with this particular transmitter as I found out about it researching AM stereo transmitters.

If I was to go with that guy at

I'd go with a PLL unit to avoid frequency drift.

Bruce.

That would be the way to go fore sue.  It could also be modified as a Car AM Stereo Transmitter.  This could also avoid people driving around and cutting in on FM stations.  Set the AM transmitter to 1700 or 1610 and Rock out.  In Oldsmobile cars their AM Radio's are Stereo.  This could really work in cars where people don't have an AUX jack.  Now if the transmitter went further it could be a nice station or at least a Christmas Lights music transmitter in areas where FM is over crowded.  This way they still have Stereo in the car and someone could advertise it.

The problem with that C-Quam AN Stereo transmitter is this guy only makes one transmitter per month. His latest one just went bye-bye and that is going to be the case with most of his transmitters, not enough product for demand. Of course Chris Cuff hasn't been active with his kits either. Seems he went silent two years ago.

I realize there are mono transmitters out there, but I'd rather try to be a different sound on the AM broadcast band. There is another part 15 station in my town at 1700KHz. This person I read about in a local newspaper. He does not seem to have the area's attention though, as people know nothing about or heard his station on the dial. I know I can't get it here and I'm located on a hill over looking his area. I believe his station is mostly related to town history and it's heritage, hence, he calls it Heritage Radio. Here is a link to the website http://www.am1700.org/ His site shows a few scrolling pictures of popular locations of my city.

Notice at the bottom of that page he refers to Hobby Broadcaster. How come not part15.us?

Quote: Visit Hobby Broadcaster or call Heritage Information Radio to learn how radio can work for you!

To put it as simply and as diplomatically as I know how, I would just get the facts and ignore the opinions.  Most opinions are biased and based on what might have worked for the person having the opinion.  Plus you're getting all their baggage.  Only you know what you want to do, what your budget is, what your skill level is, etc.  Go with what feels right for you, after getting the facts.

I've also found that having success in Part 15 broadcasting is being willing to try things out, sometimes several times, until you arrive at a place that you feel comfortable with.  It might mean buying several transmitters until you get the 'right' one.  Or playing around with ground systems and radials until you get the range you want.  If you want to maximize your sound, range and # of listeners, it will definitely not be plug and play.  Plug and play is for those that just want to send music around their house or immediate neighbourhood - you get a Talking House, power it up and you're off to the races.  And there's nothing wrong with that, if that is your goal.

For what you want to do, I suspect there's going to be a lot of experimentation.

By the way, I applaud your wanting to do something different and looking into AM stereo.  I don't think too many have played around with it.  You can report your experiences back to the group and we can all learn.  Did you look at the transmitter from APISYS?
