It is mainly for the AM transmitter I would like to use this on. I get about a mile range with it but when I hit that mile there is some noise you can hear. I am hoping this may kill some of that noise. Is there much of a difference between the MDX1600 and the dbx 266xs, or do they both do the same thing???
I haven't used the Behringer unit, so I can't compare it to the dbx. I think, though, that either unit can get you where you want to go.

winter4w I am glad to see that you have picked this forum board to aquire and advance your education and knowledge in regards to legal part 15 radio broadcasting.
Your quarries here offer us all a wealth of education in the process.
The DBX266XS is a pretty good processor, most swear by the DBX brand of processors, then again you also have those who swear by the Behringer equipment as well.
The DBX266SX has an expandergate section with RATIO and THRESHOLD, the compressor section has THRESHOLD, RATIO, ATTACK, RELEASE and OUTGAIN just like the MDX1600, however, the MDX1600 also has a side chain and an ENHANCER section. Those two options do not appear on the DBX266SX as far as I can see from the pictures I am looking at.
The DBX266SX has an over easy button, I am not familiar with that option, both have a COUPLE channel option and an AUTO ATTACK AND RELEASE abilities.
Both processors can be used on stereo equipment as well as mono, you'd only be using one side of the unit's inputs and outputs.
Both units have two switches on the back for PROFESSIONAL AUDIO or HOME USER AUDIO, PROFESSIONAL is not used in part 15 transmitters, therefore you'd set these switches to -10dBV not +4dBu.
Trying to think if there is anything else to add here, but for now.....to be continued...

@marosborne What do you have your Attack and Decay set at? This may help others who need to set up a compressor and limiter. I have one built into NextKast, but if I need a separate one for AM it could be a help.
There is one problem with speaking about both SOFTWARE and HARDWARE processors in the same topic, because it is done in every published article on the web time in and time out.
Software and hardware are TWO different animals, I know personally, everytime I tried learning about HARDWARE related compression and limiting, I am always reading someone's software advertising, sure, that's fine if I want to purchase their $100 software package, but when it comes to HARDWARE, we're totally lost unless we buy the software, because hardware does not have all the features such as SAM or Stereo Tool does. So to me, hardware and software is like apples to hamburg. The two together in same topic, just adds confusion. That is why so many people throw away the hardware and buy SAM and Stereo Tool, or Breakaway SOFTWARE packages because there is more hype on the web in regards to those then there is proper use of hardware versions.

What I like about dbx units is that it's almost impossible to make them sound bad. The settings I'm using right now wouldn't be the ones I used if I were to try to attract an audience. I'm using it mainly to play CD's, mp3's, and web stations around my yard. Being an old geezer, I like a little old fashioned "snap" in my processing, so I have the attack set at about 12 o'clock, and the release set pretty close to as fast as you can get it.
Your mileage would *definitely* vary!
A good place to start for pleasant, clean, and full processing on this unit is to hit the "over easy" button. You can't lose with that one!

MrBruce Said: I have to admit that is a very good ingenius name for a preset! "Over Easy" gives me a feel of an unbroken egg yolk in a sense, it also gives me a feel of an unbroken sound track. Very delicate comes to mind here.
Sounds kind of strange to say unbroken sound track, but there really isn't a one name title for it, since the end result could be just about anything from a voice track, sound effects to a single kick drum track.
Old geezer? LOL! You remind me of me.
@ winter4w
My suggestion is go with what appeals to you the most, in this industry, buying and trying equipment to get a learning curve from it is worth the trial and error invloved, because, you can always sell that equipment to another hobbiest when you find something better. Check for example, the sold items listings on ebay for signal processors, most sell pretty quickly.

Shoudn't this trhead be somewhere else on this site?
I will look into that unit also 🙂 I see some on ebay in my price range. I am guessing the over easy is like a auto feature where it picks the best settings?
Well after some reading and looking into I see people say hardware will get you better sound. That is also true if I dont like it or it does not work I can just sell it again. With software I am stuck with it.
@wdcx
Yea lol I did make another post mainly about this but it seems it shifted to this topic.
Well all I got to say is C. Crane has some great support. I now got 2 transmitters one has issues, the other one doesn’t really. The only issue I have with the new one is when I turn it on it sometimes won’t transmit. However I found out that if I unplug it from the audio source it has a better chance of working when I power it back on. Not so worried about this since all I do is set it to the frequency, turn it on and BAM it sits there until the batteries die on it :p
I also got the MDX-1600 off eBay around $45 including shipping. Not sure if I got a good deal on it but I will post my experience with it when I get it 🙂
Let us know how your New C. Crane does. Maybe when you plug it into the wall you'll get better results.
Well I decided to see if I can mod the new one but it looks like they done it for me. Tomorrow I will try it with the wall adapter and see how far it goes and how it works. I know with the wall adapter there is a hum so we will see about taking care of that.
When I bought my Whole House 3.0 it came with a regulated power adapter better than it's original one. You may need to do the same with the C. Crane. Most of these transmitters come with POS power supplies.
winter4w If you need help with using and setting up your MDX1600, I will try to help you if I see you asking for such help since I own this unit.
Bruce.
