So I am wondering if it is legal to use the Baofeng GT-3 to commutate to a walkie talkie. I would like to use this radio so when we all go skiing our family and friends can stay commutated on the mountain where cell phone coverage is dead. Also with this what will you say the max range is on it?
Thanks 🙂
Nevermind I did some reserch and you need to have a lisence. I am wondering if any of you know a good legal radio that I can get for skiing 🙂
Thanks
Do a search on GMRS. Two variants are available, unlicensed for a mile or so range and licensed (easy go get) for longer range.

Yea I know I would need a license to go far but I would need to get everyone who uses it a license and I would mainly use it for ski or road trips. I guess my main question know from what you all know is what would be the best 2 way radio for skiing or driving? I have looked at reviews of some but they seem to all be the same and so far on these forums I have been getting great answers to my questions 🙂
Thanks 🙂
The FRS Walkie Talkie's usually go 1 mile at best. Cobra makes a nice one and or Midland and even Radio Shack has them. Now the FRS ones have 14 channels. GMRS as 22 and shares 7 of them with FRS. Had a Cobra pair before. Even the GMRS didn't get out that far. It may have went 1.5 miles but was very spotty past ½ mile. I also heard MURS Radio's did very well. As far as the first Radio you mentioned you can program the FRS frequencies into them or use MURS frequencies in them. You should know what frequencies they are because these Radio's cover from 144-440 Mhz and if you don't know what your doing those Radio's could land you in trouble. I've seen on Youtube where some Ham's used them for 2 meter and 440 HT's. But as far as unlicensed you can also look at CB Walkie Talkie's too but don't know how that will work for you. They'd cover more than 5 miles that is for sure. As far as UHF Radio's your stuck with one of the two services FRS or MURS.
Ok so I found 3 radios. I would like to know which ones do you guys recomend or have had a good experience with. Max range I would like is 1 mile.
Midland GXT1000VP4
Motorola MS350R
Cobra CXT235
Sorry that I cannot comment on these specific models but I do have experience with a Midland FRS pair I purchased and used several years ago. The radios worked fine but were a little hard to set up for channel and tone squelch. They had a feature where if you were using tone squelch you could press the transmit button half way to listen to check that the channel was clear before transmitting.
Range outdoors was pretty good. We used them at a fairgrounds (guessing about 20 acres) to keep in contact and they worked for this. We also used them indoors at a large shopping center and they failed on range and were not usable. This is likely due to the poor building penetration at UHF and not due to the radio quality.

Ok so from reading online the best people use for skiing are Midland GXT1000VP4. So I guess I will go and give it a shot and see what happens. I can also get a mic and headset for my helmet so I can just put the radio away in my jacket. I know putting it in the jacket can drop the range but worst comes to worst I just take it out and rise it in the sky. I will do a range test on these and see how far I can get them to go before losing it 🙂
Thanks 🙂
The best thing to do is to use a police scanner and program all the FRS frequencies in it and do a scan for a while in your area to see which ones are the clearest or one that is 100% clear. This is what the students did at the school for the blind in Little Rock, Arkansas. It really helped as we chose channel 3 and sometimes channel 7 to talk on and we really had good range with them. When I was on the second floor a student went to a hotel close by the school and stayed there with his girlfriend and their friends stayed at the same hotel with their women for the weekend. One keyed up and asked a friend to come into their room and I recognized the student. I asked where they were staying and it was over 2 miles away and I was able to hear a little noise in the back ground of the carrier. Midland makes some nice Radio's and I'd say they are close to Motorola but Motorola is a little more expensive as far as that goes. Ghe Cobra's are cheaper in price and they seem to have a slight and I mean very slight decrease in Range to the Midland and Motorola's. Let me know what your range is with them.
Motorola's cost more for a reason.
Fantastic radios.
Yea Motorola's can last a long time. From reading on some ski forums people say they did not get the best range with Motorola's. Guess I will find out when I got skiing 😛
Thanks 🙂
CLICK-FFFT: Ah, hope somebody is monitoring this frequency... I just skied off an abrupt cliff ledge and am currently in free fall half-of-the-way down... 2/3rds of the way down... 1/3 [BOOF!]
Yea bro that’s why I need it 😛 jk
Just curious because I have been listening to allot of singles on my SDR and I am curious where on the FCC do you go to get your license to use that stuff? I did look on their site but could not find anything on how to get it just what it is. If someone can send me a direct link to buy it that will be great :). I believe it is $80 from what I looked up.
Thanks 🙂
