Read and learn, and it was the newspaper that informed me why 590 "The Fan" has been silent for awhile, and the story appears again at Radio Discussions under the "St. Louis forum."
The story gives a single reason for the station being off the air, it says they haven't paid their electricity bill... the power company shut them off.
The station is co-owned by Grand Slam Sports, LLC, along with 1380 "The X," which is also silent much of the time, but pops on during some hours with "Extreme Talk," really "extreme potty talk," which I have commented about in another thread.
But the 590 signal has technical complexities that make it the one to close... for one thing it's very far outside of town... way off in Woodriver, Illinois, with 1 kW and a 4-tower directional array pointed toward the Gateway Arch. I drove there once and it was a long drive. Electricity and upkeep way out in the cornfield is a burdensome expense.
Word is they may be selling 590 to an unnamed religious group.
590 makes a choice carrier current channel, and in the 1950s St. Louis University operated KBIL to all their dormatories.
But my LPB CC transmitters are rigged for 970 kHz midband, and converting to lowband is too much trouble.

They obviously have dedicated people who work hard to provide a full service information source to Kalamzoo and surrounding.
WKZO also lists many podcasts! There might be something there we could program.
There are detailed stories in papers and radio forums about trouble at the local 590 licensed station, such things as name calling on the air, fist fight in the hall, one man to hospital another to jail...
But I'm not linking those stories because this website isn't about licensed radio per se, but as part 15ers on the hunt for open channels 590 locally is open for use right now.
590's investors are discussing ways of restoring their station, but talk of a sale is also hanging around.
