Ok so I have been doing about a year of searching about transmitters and I'm ready to buy one i'm sick of searching. I wanted the Ramsey FM25B but I don't want to build it. The pre-built one are expensive. I found this PLL transmitter with a wattage of about 0.5W. What do you think is it worth buying?

No.

It is illegal in the U.S. because it has too much signal strength.

Many of the eBay over-powered imports put out spurious signals above the main frequency and are also illegal because they may cause interference to air traffic channels above the FM band.

No.

It is illegal in the U.S. because it has too much signal strength at 1/2 Watt.

The preemphasis is set to the European standard: 50 us, which will sound very muffled on U.S. FM radios.

A while ago, before I smartened up, I bought one.  Audio quality not great.  And a weak right channel (that could not be fixed by inputting more right channel).  So I bought a second one.  Audio quality not great.  And a weak right channel.  Then I bought some RF attenuators to put between the transmitter and the rubber duck antenna so I wouldn't be illegal.

After about $150 spent on this garbage, I bought a CCrane FM2.  Nice little transmitter.  Clean and legal!  And only $50.

That's my $.02.

Cute they took the name off the unit but reading the specs it is the same transmitter as my SainSonic I had issues with harmonics and spurs and a little hum. The Audio was OK but you had to use a compressor to get it to sound right. The longer I had the transmitter I noticed it produced harmonics and spurs every 10.7 Mhz from 2 Mhz and past the FM band. These harmonics continued to about 75-100 feet away. On other portions of the FM dial the transmitter caused a BUZZ BUZZ HUM on different parts of the FM dial. With that POS you'll make enemies with neighbors and thus killing off any chance of getting them to support your station. If you can afford it I'd go with the Hole Whole House FM Transmitter 3.0 I hear it has less harmonics and spurs. Ramsey is another good choice as its cleaner than the SainSonic which this one they took off the name. If you don't need the extra range C. Crane has the FM2 which I hear don't sound bad and its clean without harmonics. I'm in the same boat as you on this one.

The funny thing is Sainsonic just put their name on it, or rather someone put their name on it. Its not actually manufactured by Sainsonic.

I want to say these are really CZERF or HLLY units.

The HLLY's are actually Better than the SainSonic units. SainSonic does seem to take some short cuts in quality in return for a cheaper price. The FailSafe unit is closet to the HLLY unit. I've been looking at these and the reason I bought from SainSonic was I thought they already had a warehouse full of these. But when tracking it I quickly learned it was a HLLY unit but cheapened down. I believe HLLY, FMUser, chztransmitter.com were the originals. Then FailSafe was the first American sold company for these. From what I read or tried to understand TAW Global (Whole House FM Transmitter) and FM user are coming up with yet another transmitter where as they will merge but haven't seen the transmitter. It was even discussed over at HB. I think SainSonic does decide the specs of these units and HLLY ships it the way they want to have it built.
