If you are interested in scanning a radio frequency band for signals to listen to or to find a clear frequency this may be a nice tool. The linked video gives a brief introduction to SDR (software define radio) technology which appears to be inexpensive and easy to use.
The one featured covers 30 MHz to about 1.7 GHz which would be useful for scanning the FM broadcast band. Unfortunately, this one doesn't cover the short wave or AM broadcast band but the presenter alludes to ways to do this.
If you view the video there are many links to others on the topic of SDR.

Glad you linked this Neil. I've been wanting to explore "software defined radio" and now's the time to start.
We'll see where it leads.
