Management Plan
After serving as manager of KDX for 11-years the job has become unmanageable as the daily routine has grown into a very busy and complex schedule.
To move forward, I am stepping down as manager, and will appoint a new hire to take over, showering them with constant phone calls and peppering them with e-mails complaining that "They aren't doing enough."
When that manager burns out the next manager will be controlled with stern reminders that "I hope you do better than that last guy."
This will be orchestrated while reclining on my giant inflatable duck floating around in the swimming pool.
Help please since I do not understand what this is about.
???
Radio8Z mysteriously says: "Help please since I do not understand what this is about."
"Station management" refers to the task of managing the day to day functions of a radio station, including technical, programming, and other details.
Even small hobby radio stations require some degree of management.
Because I have a group of stations, the responsibilities have grown to be more than I can tackle on my own.
This should give you a starting point for understanding my opening post.
Running a radio station takes a lot of time. Particularly a Part 15 station which has limited personnel and resources (usually one person).
I know when I was operating my community station on Bowen Island, the radio station (which broke even at best) seemed to take an inordinate amount of time compared to the real money making activities. And that was with little live broadcasting.
It's why now I usually set the station on automation, and let 'er rip (and I don't think I'm alone in that).
I feel Carl's pain, as I would like to do far more (but just don't have the time).
I understood the opening paragraph. What follows seems a bit silly.
Yes I agree that if you are live and doing special programs it takes most of your time. Me, that's the reason I don't have special real time programs and/or go live(well, one of two reasons). Automated with everything pre-done including jingles and ID's requires nothing more than being a listener and making sure it's working properly. I still have the pleasure of my own station. All the time was taken when I put it all together making the ID's Jingles and compiling the huge playlist.
I actually have the time but I would prefer to be a listener but maybe if I knew I had regular listeners I would change my thinking.

So?
Whether I was "silly" or not is not the main issue... it is your apparent disregard for what you deem "silly".
Has it entered your mind that this entire hobby is silly?
Not all of us sit at the computer wearing a 3-piece suit with bow-tie.
But, I could recount those halcyon days with the Knight Kit Phono Oscillator. I know you wouldn't find that silly.
It began as a kit.
Responding to comments in quotes:
"So?"
Why post it?
"Whether I was “silly” or not is not the main issue… it is your apparent disregard for what you deem “silly”."
I don't even know what you mean by this. Obviously, I read it and am responding to it...hardly a disregard. This is the "main issue"? What "issue"? Are you trying to make one?
"Has it entered your mind that this entire hobby is silly?"
Yes, silly but enjoyable most of time. And this made me wonder why you seemed so distressed by your self imposed work load and fantasized a solution and then expended the effort to post about it.
"But, I could recount those halcyon days with the Knight Kit Phono Oscillator. I know you wouldn’t find that silly."
Absolute agreement about this. I was 12 years old and it was a great toy which inspired my interest in radio technology. Though it is still a toy for me my mind is advanced beyond that age and if I feel overworked or stressed by this hobby I put it away while I recharge and come back to enjoy it some more.
"Not all of us sit at the computer wearing a 3-piece suit with bow-tie."
To again quote you: "So?"
Carl says this hobby is "silly"?
I hope you are just being sarcastic.
Depends On What You Mean By Silly
What our serious colleague judged as "silly" wasn't originally meant to be silly.
We were talking about management styles. Not at all far fetched considering the many possibilities opened by "the hobby".
The main thing about being brought before a kangaroo court is that there is no defense. That's something serious.
I enjoy Carl's posts. Even when there may be an apparent lack of seriousness, there are always gems hidden within.
You always have an alternative - don't read them if you find them uninteresting, or not to your taste.
Surely there is room for viewpoints and discussion other than the pure technical in the world of Part 15 broadcasting. The alternative is to have near empty Forums (a wasteland of non posting - I know at least one example of that), or sheer repetition and Internet-found material regurgitation (there is one well known site for that) - there's only so much technical that can be talked about in a field this narrow.
Kangaroo court? Yep, it appears that I am on trial for posting an opinion that part of a post seemed silly. I was trying to understand the original post prior to being suspected of having an "issue", a comment which I also sought to understand.
Carl lastly posted "What our serious colleague judged as “silly” wasn’t originally meant to be silly. We were talking about management styles." which is what I was trying to determine so I could understand the point being made. I believe this response would have sufficed.

It was left to the reader to define the sense in which Mr. 8Z holds the word "silly". There are many possibilities:
SILLY definitions
1. Laughable or amusing through foolishness or a foolish appearance.
2. (Scotland) Good, pious, holy.
3. (Northern England) Pitiful, inspiring compassion, insignificant, worthless, weak, frail, flimsy.
4. (rural Britain) Simple, plain, homely, lowly.
5. Mentally simple, foolish, uneducated, unlearned, thoughtless, lacking judgement, mentally retarded, stupified.
6. Charming.
7. Playful, giggly.
8. Pejorative: simple, not intelligent, unrefined.
9. Gently derogatory.
Looking back, I realize I assumed the reference to silly was a disapproval, but now realize that Mr. 8Z might have been telling me I was charming.
Everything posted after that point might have been a simple misunderstanding.
My intention was definitely to be charming.
Carl,
If you are interested, I had in mind your definition #7. Sorry if you assumed otherwise.
