"... McCann's songs span a range of genres, from indie-pop to electro-soul to country-rap. There’s just one crucial difference between McCann and traditional musicians.

“I have no musical talent at all,” he said. “I can’t sing, I can’t play instruments, and I have no musical background at all."

McCann, 37, who has a background as a visual designer, started experimenting with AI to see if it could boost his creativity and "bring some of my lyrics to life.” Last month, he signed with independent record label Hallwood Media after one of his tracks racked up 3 million streams, in what's billed as the first time a music label has inked a contract with an AI music creator. ...."

Not surprising really, but sure hope it doesn't become a norm. But in many ways it already has. Kind of unnerving really.

I have posted about this before. Virtually all pop music that dominates radio by all the well known pop singers led by Taylor swift who even mimes at her live shows has been synthesized since the late eighties and auto tune makes singers sound like robots and it's not their real voices you are hearing. Even live shows what you hear is not the singers real voice but a processed replica. You have only to listen to Justin Bieber to hear this. And the audience for this, millennials and Gen Z don't know or care. Anyone that knows what real instruments sound like, what a real drum kit played by a real drummer sounds like, what a real guitar sounds like, what real strings or horns, a real orchestra sounds like, knows it's all artificial. A real orchestra on a pop record hasn't been heard since the end of the seventies. And all rap is 100% synthetic. It's all machine generated.
This article that Rich posted is just the next step. Nothing new.
To me, all pop is not any more music then a lawnmower. one machine vs another.
There is still real music today but it's underground not mainstream. You can see it on youtube.
And on my station not ONE song played is synthesized. Yes I live in the past.

@mark I'm right with you on most of that, as you point out, in essence we've been listening to AI enhanced music albums for years, but what changed is that now anybody, a six year old even can from scratch create a full fledged musical production that sounds great. It now takes no genuine talent at all to create music and albums. ANYONE can do it, it takes no expertise or experience. Just rub the magic latern, Aladdin takes care of the rest.

But I still consider it real music regardless if it's created by plucking steel strings, blowing through a tube, beating on stretched canvas or by digitally created replicas of the sounds. It's all still music to me.

But now that it's become so simple to do, and increasingly widespread, it kind of makes you wonder if the world will ever have any true rock heros again. If it ever becomes the norm, you can forget about going to live concerts!
