I have been doing some research on live music performances from the old Ed Sullivan show. Back then, and for most of its existence, these performances were indeed done live.
When Bob Dylan was first starting out, he was invited to perform on the show. He decided he wanted to play "Talkin' John Birch Paranoid Blues". Needless to say, the producers weren't thrilled at that choice, balked, and Dylan walked out. Turns out he didn't need the publicity, anyway, but it probably did delay his career a bit.
Then there was an incident with The Doors. The show wanted Jim Morrison to change the lyrics of Light My fire (the offending line, Girl We Couldn't Get Much Higher). They went ahead and performed the lyric anyway, and shortly after that virtually every performance was lip synched. The group was banned from the show as well, although it really didn't hurt them.
In a rather famous incident, Michelle Phillips of the Mamas and the Papas protested on air during their forced lip synch performance, pulling out a banana and eating it. She even sang into it at the end of the song.
I knew the Doors story, they also dramatized it in the movie. But didn't know Dylan walked out on Sulliven or that Michelle sang to a banana.
Which reminds me, last night noticed some new Dylan movie available for streaming free. Don't know who plays Dylan, but pu it in my watch list. I loved the Elvis movie
Ol' Ed Sullivan was as powerful as he was ugly. Got his way and didn't like the rebels.
