I never heard of this till now and I'm not too happy to hear it at all. Apparently it has been around for decades. Looked it up also. But it's supposed to be selective in what it blocks. It is supposed to block infrared and UV, above and below visible light, which is nowhere near where RF in the radio bands are. The lower the frequency the less effect and AM radio is way down near the bottom of the radio wave part of the spectrum.
All I know is why is everything out to kill radio and no one cares? People put aluminum siding on houses...why? Now these stupid windows on buildings where you went to have good reception. Lets just kill all terrestrial over the air radio, including our hobby.
Artisan, this is bad for us and I hope you can move to a place better. I hope I can move to a better place also but at least I am in a regular house where from inside, even a basement I can get RF out and in, pretty unobstructed. They can take these windows and %$#!@& you know what I mean. When/if I move somewhere, I have to check things like this.
It's energy efficiency for the house/building, cheaper to air condition, maybe heat too, I don't know, but you may be over reacting. Seems that OTA signals reach the TVs and radios and cellphones and whatever else within the building that requires radio waves..
Like you said, it's been around for decades. The signals shouldn't have too much trouble getting in.. radio waves don't have to use the window.
I guess it could be a problem. The house on one side has a brick and stone facade, the rest is vinyl siding. Vinyl soon to be replaced by cement board siding because of durability and fire resistance. However, I do have a steel roof.
