We have something like this locally. Just east of where I am located, there is a town called Abbotsford. Much of it was originally a shallow lake, called Sumas Lake. It was drained in the 1920s to create farmland and eventually the town.
But the lake tends to come back when there's a lot of rain. Specifically, in 2021, and just recently. There is major flooding (just the lake wanting to return) and the closing of a major highway (the TransCanada or Highway 1), as the water spills over.
Not great planning.
