At KDX our genres are listed as "News, Talk, Think" and we additionally bring the occasional classical music concert.
News and talk pull a listener's attention such that they are left no significant time for thinking their own thoughts without intrusion.
The same can be said for beloved or interesting music which tends to occupy the central attention of listeners again interfering with a fully undisturbed mind free to think.
Of course we don't want our audience to turn off their radios, and if we transmit pure silence they will think we are not on the air, so how can we keep them tuned in while allowing a completely relaxed open field for engaging in personal daydreaming and intellectual space?
Our deep research has determined that so-called "ambient" music provides an ideal innocuous background which "frees up the mind" and gives "breathing space for the brain". Therefore KDX punctuates the program day with ambient "rest" music.
