To cool down from all the terrible war news I was watching blooper videos on YouTube showing TV performers having laughing fits on camera. That has happened to me a few times on licensed professional radio. Let me recall a few memories.
At 7 AM I had the job of signing on the local FM station and every 15-minutes I read a live commercial on the air, and during the music segments I'd put my head down and grab a nap. One morning the copy for the local gas company was new and I hadn't read it before, so I had to read it 'cold' as we say in the business. "And the new gas ranges have an automatic cock timer that... and the new gas ranges have an automatic clock timer that turns the oven off and on automatically". It was the kind of blunder that could have reduced me to speechless giggling but I was very close to the edge and made it all the way through. Shortly afterwords the program director arrived and told me she'd been listening in the car and couldn't believe that I'd make it all the way through. It was a very close call.
At an AM station I wasn't so tuff. I was deeply engrossed reading the news and went into a kind of news zone which was going very well. But for an instant I looked up and in his studio on my right the music host was watching me in rapt attention as he was following the news stories, and straight in front of me the audio engineer was engrossed watching me read, and seeing those two mugs so blankly looking at me struck a chord and I started laughing for no reason at all and was unable to stop the laughter. They needed to start a record and I doubt that they understood what caused me to break down. Thinks got very serious when the boss called and demanded to know what was so funny. Despite being a trained communicator I was completely unable to give a reason for losing my composure on the air.
