My Experiences with a 5 watt FM Transmitter

December 21, 2006 by T.ALLRED

Back in October I paid $235.00 for a 5 watt transmitter so I could experiment. After Me and My dad got a 20′ pole set up w/ my $40.00 antenna mounted at the very top and some cheap 51 ohm RG8 coax (same as 50 ohm, just cheaper) I began to experiment. So far My range has been fair. I have between 3/4 mile and 2 miles of clear signal, and close to 7 miles distant signal. Soon I will improve my range even more. I will soon have a 50′ pole guy-wired to the side of my house. I will also be using the ”good stuff”. My RG8 coax will be replaced with 50 ohm RG213. Then I will use my leftover RG213 for My SSTRAN AM tx. Once I Conduct my next experiment I will post my results.

*Note* I know this tx is far beyond part 15 regs and I have given this much time, thought, and consideration.

A new part 15 radio program in the works…

September 16, 2006 by T.ALLRED

After many searches I have found no part 15 radio program for stations with a ‘Country’ format. Soooooooooooo, I’ve decicided to try to create one. Here is my scheme…

Title:n/a
Length:1 or 2 hours
Air Time: Weekly
How to Recieve: download
Summary: A Radio Program playing the best country music from the 50’s to the early 90’s. You’ll hear Singers Like: Randy Travis, Alan Jackson, George Gones, Loretta Lynn, Clint Black, Dolly Parton, Porter Wagoner, John Anderson, Buck Owens, and many, many more.

Please Give me Feedback about this. I also need some suggestions on how to send out downloads since I know nothing about the technical side of this. Also, I have dial-up, which may affect the future of this.

Telephone Ground

August 19, 2006 by T.ALLRED

After catching up on all the topics I decicied to go to my blog. I noticed Neil from radio8z asked me a question about my telephone ground. I am nearly 16 and don’t know the techinical jargon but I can do my best to explain. What I call a “telephone ground” is an 8′ gnd stake beside my house. There is a small telephone interface network box ( I don’t know what that is) on the outside of my house. Bellsouth has the TIN box drounded to it. I did the same thing. I am getting about 1,000 to 1,500′ with this setup. My wire antenna is connected via an alligator clip to the screw on a light switch plate. For some reason the signal is best under or near the power line. That’s where I’m getting the 1500′ from. I don’t know why it works in that manner, but I find it interesting that it does when w/ most AM stations’ signals under powerlines cause interference w/ the AM signal. I am currently trying to get my outdoor antenna set up. By then I’m expecting at least 3/4 mile to 1 1/4 mile of quality signal.

The SSTRAN Story

July 25, 2006 by T.ALLRED

For a while now I’ve been Preparing to buy me a SSTRAN. I finally purchased one from Phil last week. It came in the mail fully assembled and nearly ready to go. Me and my dad borrowed my uncle’s voltage meter and I peaked it at about 16 volts. My dad hooked it up to the telephone ground and I was expecting about 200 foot at best. At sundown me and my dad got into our car and drove up our driveway and got a crisp signal all the way to the highway.

That’s about 1000 feet. tomorrow I will do some more tests during daylight howers to see how it will do.
