LPFM – How did this all start?

August 25, 2008 by frankh19

About six months ago, I contacted the people behind KCFL-LP to find out if they were going to put the station back on the air. Contributions had dried up due to the uncertainty of The Dalles to South King County move of KMCQ. Because of the lack of funds, the station went silent. My goal was to try to put the station back on the air by creating a programming agreement where I would supply a feed from East Hill Radio. I never did make the offer, just an inquiry.

About a month ago, I received an email from the group offering the license at no cost as they are building several NCE stations and translators in Southwest Washington. Needless to say, I agreed and we started the process.

What is our group getting? Pretty much the license, antenna, feed line, and that’s it. We’ll have to buy a transmitter, install and test it, and work out the myriad of details involved in getting a station back on the air. In addition, we’ll have to look over our shoulder to make sure that we don’t get knocked of the air by KMCQ moving from Radio Hill in Enumclaw to Cougar Mountain in Bellevue/Issaquah.

Right now, it’s a waiting game as the FCC does its thing. We will just have to be patient and wait for the FCC’s approval (or not.)
