Talking House Observations

December 15, 2012 by bandit

I now have 5 talking house units and an ATU. In preliminary testing, I am noticing that each unit sounds different from the other. I have TH2-TH5 an even two TH5’s sound differently. Some have full fidelity and others sound like crud. Also, some can be driven harder (audio wise) than others (that distort at a lower level) Anyone else ever notice this?

It seems to affect my range greatly.

Left to add to our arsenal… a good 10-20 watt AM transmitter to head our cc system… anyone have one they want to sell? Anyone have any tips for me regarding our recent purchase?

Who wants a 100,000 watt FM?

If you say you? Think again.

If you say you? Think again.

It used to be that websites were where radio stations would promote their signals to gain a bigger share of listeners. The actual AM or FM was the main focus – the end result. Now, with radio’s own efforts to convince it’s audiences to find them elsewhere (IE: webstreams, facebook, HD radio) & with rising technology in smart phones, computers, devices, etc, the industry has inadvertently made their websites into their perceived main signal. The website IS the radio station. Radio is now promoting for their websites instead of the traditional “other way around.” Why is that important? Because now the millions of dollars they invested in their AMs & FMs have turned into what amounts to “the worst advertising campaigns ever bought.”

Wouldn’t they love a client who agreed to pay them 5 mill to promote their business. They’ll never find it. They are it.

Now, a website is more believable as a radio station when an actual signal, no matter how poor, is established in town. If the audience can sometimes pick it up on their radio, they tend to believe the corresponding website to be credible local station. The game is now, how to put a signal into town in the most affordable manner… and direct them to the website (as other local stations do) for listening and other station experiences. The overall “value” of the broadcast signal is diminishing in great measure. Cheaper/more horrid signals are becoming more valuable every day. FM translators they couldn’t give away 5 years ago are selling for 200k today.

And here we are. The brightest of the bunch.

I am glad to be in your company!

…and now this message…

To those who have a spare coupler… or one that has been collecting dust in the basement, I would greatly like to see you turn that coupler (add echo) into cash.(remove echo)

If you have never ever ever had to put that spare coupler on the air, why not treat yourself to a small amount of money… and the good will of knowing that two couplers ought to create two part 15 stations; promoting part 15 to all. Wouldn’t we all be smart pioneers when the big boys begin to feel the power of another properly tuned, marketed and developed part 15 station. What if that station were to make part 15 radio history? We would be the few who were “country when country wasn’t cool.”

What a good measure of peace during the holidays… listing your coupler for sale with a low reserve on ebay. Just one more piece of the puzzle making you A-OK in our book. Imagine how good that will make you feel!

Thank you for listening – and now back to your regularly scheduled program. brought to you by .1 mfd caps. Try one today!

I Am New…

December 1, 2012 by bandit

but only new as a member… I have read with great interest all of your posts and am already in the thick of making part 15 work for our small city. CC, free radiate… the whole thing… the best we can.

See, we are already successful on the internet and putting new international streams on is easy. Also, I have done this before…

I once had 3 rangemasters synched and covering a small town. There was no carrier current element (there should have been) and we were selling $1,000 ad campaigns. The station eventually grew to become an internet station and it’s listenership grew from there. However, it lost a very dear element… localism. Ended up selling the rangemasters and staying on the net.

And we’re gonna try and do it again. even bigger. outdoor boxes have been bought. solar panels are bought and being tested. batteries… four talking houses… 5.8ghz wireless links & antennas are already in house. Next it’s the carrier current… which may fundamentally be the best thing we can do here. Testing begins as soon as we decide on a coupling system. Anyone want to sell one cheap?

250 feet from an electric line is nothing to sneeze at. Even 100 feet is awesome. Maybe some of our experiments will have substance here and we can all gain from it. However, in the beginning… it’s just us, a ton of drive (a little funding) and a .1 mfd cap. Pictures coming soon. Wish us luck!
