AM STEREO LIVES

July 1, 2006 by AMFMGUY

If what I have been hearing, and experiencing over the past month otr so is any indication, AM-STereo is definitely getting some play.

While it doesn’t seem to be of interest to most CE’s who contribute to the broadcast lists don’t even recognize its existence. However, amongst some AM owners, one of which is in Pittsburg, there seems to be a groundswell of support for making AM interesting again .. and AM-stereo is all that’s out there right now.

Sure, it seems foolish to even think about it when there is no one out there except ourselves, (Fanfare Electronics in Buffalo NY) and perhap one or two others, making an AM-stereo receivers. And the price is not Walkman or iPod.

However, the argument for AM-stereo, antenna problems aside, is the fact that, properly set up and with a properly designed receiver, could sound as good if not better than FM.

How does this stack up against AM-IBOC? I don’t know. I’ve not heard AM IBOC. I’ve only heard what is being said about it. However, I do know that, for the amount of work that has to be done, and the likelihood that there will be sideband interference of an intolerable nature until all of North America decides to move to AM-IBOC, it will be an uphill battle all the way.
